Daniel S. Goldberger
Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Goldberger brings more than 25 years of success leading medical device businesses.
Prior to joining Sound Surgical Technologies, Mr. Goldberger was chief executive officer of Glucon, Inc., a developer of glucose monitoring devices based on photoacoustic principles. From 2001 to 2004, he was president of the Medical Group of OSI Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: OSIS). The Medical Group grew to exceed $250 million under Mr. Goldberger's leadership, and included Spacelabs Medical, Dolphin Medical and Osteometer.
In 1994, Mr. Goldberger co-founded Optiscan Biomedical Corporation, a venture-backed project in the glucose monitoring field. He previously held general management positions with Ohmeda and Nellcor, both suppliers of critical care solutions.
Mr. Goldberger earned a BSME from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MSME from Stanford University. He is an inventor on more than 50 U.S. patents in the medical device field.
Mark E. Schafer, Ph.D.
Vice President, Research & Development and Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Schafer joined Sound Surgical Technologies in August 2008. Prior to joining the company, he served as president and principal scientist with Sonic Tech, Inc. From 2001 to 2008, he provided consulting expertise in management, product development, research, testing, manufacturing, and regulatory aspects of ultrasound systems and applications.
From 1998 to 2001, Dr. Schafer served as vice president, Ultrasound Technology Group, Perceptron, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of ultrasound systems for the forest products industry, where his work resulted in six new patents.
He was the founder and CEO of Sonic Technologies, Inc., specializing in measurement of diagnostic, surgical and lithotripsy medical ultrasound devices from 1989 to 1998 when the company was sold to Perceptron, Inc. At Sonic Technologies, he led the development of new applications of ultrasound product lines for the food and forestry industries, from inception through research, development, manufacturing, marketing and sales.
Prior to that time, Dr. Schafer served in various ultrasound and sonar research and development positions, including senior research engineer with Interspec, Inc. While there, he was responsible for system design and project engineering of new medical ultrasound products, including annular array and flow mapping devices, multi-element ultrasonic transducers, and computer simulation of novel ultrasound imaging algorithms and transducer designs.
He has been a visiting adjunct professor at the Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute at Drexel University and has authored numerous articles in refereed journals, book chapters and conference proceeding papers.
Dr. Schafer is the holder of 13 U.S. patents. He is a fellow and governor of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and a former chair of its Standards Committee, past president and a director of the Ultrasonic Industry Association, chair of the Ultrasound Technical Committee of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, and an expert representative to the International Electrotechnical Commission for ultrasonic surgical and high intensity focused ultrasound equipment.
Dr. Schafer holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.S. in acoustics from Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Drexel University.
David B. Mogill
Vice President, Operations
Mr. Mogill joined Sound Surgical Technologies in March 2008. He previously held senior operations positions with Glucon, Inc., a developer of glucose monitoring devices based on photoacoustic principles; the CeraMed division of Dentsply International Inc., a producer of synthetic and natural bone regenerative products and distributor of dental implants; and Star Guide Division of UTI Corp.'s Medical Technology Group, a contract manufacturer of medical device components and assemblies for companies such as Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson and Guidant.
Mr. Mogill holds a B.S.M.E.T. from Metropolitan State College, Denver, CO.
Stephen C. Smith
Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance
Mr. Smith brings 18 years of quality and regulatory experience to his position.
Prior to joining Sound Surgical Technologies, Mr. Smith was a senior RAQA associate with AlloSource. AlloSource is a non-profit organization that develops, processes and distributes life-saving and life-enhancing allografts.
From 1992 to 1998, he served as a quality assurance supervisor for electro-surgical hardware products at Covidien PLC. (formerly Valleylab). He supervised all in-process inspection activities, co-wrote the workmanship standard and developed numerous process failure mode effects analyses (FMEAs). Mr. Smith also worked as a quality engineer, managing over 100 suppliers of electronic components and assemblies. He had responsibility for $160 million of electronic products supplied to Valleylab. He also supported numerous research and development projects in the release of new products.
Mr. Smith graduated from the Leeds College of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.S. in operations management.
Adnan Merchant
Vice President, Engineering
Mr. Merchant has over 25 years of expertise in developing and successfully commercializing new products in large and small companies.
From 1987 to 2003, Mr. Merchant worked for Tyco Healthcare. While there, he developed the market-leading Nellcor™ pulse oximetry products, calling upon expertise in electro-optics, electronics and high-volume manufacturing. As director of R&D, he was also responsible for the development of Mallinckrodt™ endotracheal, Shiley™ tracheostomy, and Warmflo™ patient warming and temperature monitoring products — together, a $400MM million annual revenue line.
Mr. Merchant has several years of experience in the aesthetics space as a senior director at Solta Medical and most recently as vice president of R&D at Cabochon Aesthetics, Inc.
Mr. Merchant holds a Bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University. He is an inventor on over 28 patents, both U.S. and European.
Serena Chase
Vice President, Clinical Education
Ms. Chase joined Sound Surgical Technologies in January 2003 as an account executive. Her passion for patient safety and clinical training dovetailed into the development of the training and education department. As the company determined the need for more focused clinical support, Ms. Chase's position expanded into her current role as vice president of clinical education.
Prior to Sound Surgical Technologies, Ms. Chase managed multiple disease state management and wellness programs for PacifiCare Health Systems to include CHF, COPD and Diabetes.
Ms. Chase received her B.A. in biology at California State University of Fullerton, Southern California and an M.B.A. from Webster University.
Kristen E. Matteson
Vice President, Marketing
Ms. Matteson joined the marketing department of Sound Surgical Technologies in June 2004. During her tenure at SST, she has served in a variety of capacities including strategic business development, brand expansion and product positioning, marketing communications, media relations, event management, and practice development. Under her guidance, the SST marketing department successfully branded the VASER Lipo System, dramatically increasing physician and consumer awareness of the technology and procedure, as well as launched the new VASER Shape, PowerX, TouchView and Origins product lines. Ms. Matteson was also responsible for developing the company’s practice development tools and programs to better support the existing and new SST customer base.
Prior to joining Sound Surgical Technologies, Ms. Matteson coordinated the campus activities events and leadership programs for a liberal arts school in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Ms. Matteson graduated magna cum laude from Colorado College and holds a B.A. in biology. She is a member of the National Association of Professional Women.
Simon Davies
Vice President, International Sales
With a BSc Hons in Physiology, Simon brings over 25 years of medical device sales/business development experience to Sound Surgical Technologies. He has spent many years in Asia and the EU building direct and third party distribution channels for Hewlett-Packard, Spacelabs, Nellcor and Mallinkrodt, as well as developing market launch programs for such diverse products as computerized robotic surgical systems and IR blood warmers. He is recognized throughout the industry as an excellent reference site developer and outstanding corporate representative. He understands the importance of outstanding customer support and offers leadership in this area throughout the world. In recent years, Simon has been extremely successful in developing VASER Lipo as the "gold standard" in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and is working to emulate this achievement in all key global markets.
